Latch hook kits for cushions and rugs

With a latch hook kit, you can create your own decorative cushion, rug or other textile project. Short pieces of yarn are attached to a canvas using a special latch hook tool. As you work across the canvas, the design gradually appears and develops a soft, textured pile.

In parts of Europe, this type of craft is also associated with the name Smyrna. In English, however, latch hook is the clearest and most widely understood term for this technique and these kits.

What is included in a latch hook kit?

A latch hook kit contains the main materials required to make the pictured design. Depending on the brand and model, this will usually include a printed or clearly marked canvas, the required pre-cut yarn and instructions.

Because the yarn is already cut to the correct length, you can start hooking without having to prepare every strand yourself.

How does latch hooking work?

Latch hooking uses a special latch hook tool to attach short lengths of yarn to a grid canvas. Each knot forms a small part of the pile of the finished piece.

The technique is straightforward and repetitive. You work row by row or colour by colour until the entire design has been completed.

Latch hook cushion kits

A latch hook cushion kit lets you create a decorative cushion front with a soft and textured finish. Designs include animals, flowers, geometric patterns and many other decorative themes.

Because of their smaller size, cushion kits are often a good introduction to latch hooking and are usually quicker to complete than a large rug.

Latch hook rug kits

If you prefer a larger project, choose a latch hook rug kit. The same basic technique is used, but on a larger canvas and with more yarn.

A handmade latch hook rug can become a colourful and distinctive feature in a room, with designs ranging from traditional patterns to modern motifs.

Is latch hooking difficult?

The basic latch hook technique is easy to learn. Once you understand how to make the knot with the hook, the same movement is repeated throughout the project.

The difficulty mainly depends on the size of the design, the number of colours and the amount of detail. A small cushion kit can therefore be ideal for beginners, while a large rug is better suited to anyone looking for a longer project.
